Today, Francophone music is absent from the general categories of the GRAMMY Awards, struggling to be heard amid the dominance of English-language music. These talented artists deserve a platform where they can shine in their own light.
New categories would be grouped into a dedicated section titled “Francophone Music”:
– Francophone Rap Album of the Year (A)
– Francophone Pop Album of the Year (A)
– Francophone Song of the Year (S/T)
(A) = The category accepts album entries
(S) = The category accepts single entries
(T) = The category accepts track entries (Any song from an album released within the past 12 months)
The goal is to provide Francophone artists with a platform to celebrate their creativity and highlight the diversity of talent that makes up the Francophone music scene.

French is the 4th most widely spoken language in the world, with more than 396 million speakers, and is experiencing significant growth, particularly in Africa, where the music scene is booming. Ignoring this reality means overlooking a major part of contemporary musical culture.
Francophone music is experiencing global expansion, driven by artists such as Jul, Stromae, Angèle, Aya Nakamura, Maes, Ninho, Himra, and Damso. These artists dominate international charts and collaborate with global stars, proving that French is an influential musical language.
Widely present in the media, cultural activities, and literature, it plays a central role in the dissemination of knowledge and artistic expression. The most populous Francophone countries and regions include France, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Canada (Quebec), Belgium, Switzerland, and several African countries.
French is a historic language in music, with icons such as Céline Dion, Gilbert Bécaud, Ginette Reno, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, the Cowboys Fringants, and more recently, Maître Gims, Charlotte Cardin, Loud, Barnev, Imposs, Taktika, Souldia, and many more. A Francophone Music category would honor this legacy while celebrating new generations of artists who are bringing the French language to audiences around the world.
Francophone music has influenced numerous genres and artists around the world. It’s time to give it the place it deserves on the global stage.
